Summer Time

May 22nd, 2009

Summer is fast approaching, and we all know that with summer come hot, long days. This is one of my favorite times of year to get out and enjoy bright sunny days. It is always nice to sit in the shade and have a nice refreshing drink that can help keep the temperatures from being too harsh. This year I plan to sit out and enjoy, but with a new twist on the all time favorite lemonade in the shade. A new favorite recipe for Peach Lemonade Smoothies is sure to have you enjoying your summer time days.
This recipe for Peach lemonade smoothies is very simple. You will only need three ingredients and a blender. You can use fresh peaches or canned peaches for this recipe; it really does not matter.

Ingredients:
One large can of peaches
One container lemonade concentrate
Ice

Blend together all ingredients. The amount of ice depends on how thick or smooth you want your drink.

This recipe is great because it only takes a few minutes and you are ready to enjoy your afternoon relaxing in the shade. These smoothies are also great for when you have friends or family over for evening outdoors. Everyone will enjoy the nice refreshing taste of these smoothies. You can’t go wrong with a cool drink and a nice summer day.

Mother’s Day Celebrations

April 30th, 2009

Mother’s Day is quickly approaching. I know that many people want to do something special for their mothers on this day. A great way to express how much you love her is by cooking her a meal. This is a really touching way to show her how much you really appreciate all the hard work that she does for you on an every day basis. It can be difficult for children to see how hard parents work to give them the things that they want until they have a family of their own. I really enjoy doing something special for my mom on mother’s day because I see how she worked when I was a child.

If you can not manage to make your mother a dinner on mother’s day, then arrange for a special dinner some place that she really enjoys going. A nice restaurant is also a great option for those that have to travel to see their mothers. This would keep her from worry about how to feed all the people that will probably be in her home on this particular day. She will greatly appreciate the effort. Even young children can make something special for their mothers. A special breakfast that is made only by the child is very nice as well even if it is just cereal. It is definitely the thought that matters most on this day. Most moms just want the people that they love to acknowledge all the hard work that goes into caring for a family.

For those who want to make their mother a meal for this great day of recognition here is a simple, but tasty recipe to make for your mother.

Planning a Picnic

April 30th, 2009

Spring means picnic season, and while picnicking in the UK is something of a risky business due to the almost constant threat of rain, it can still be fun to pack up a basket and head out to your favourite park.  picnicA picnic can vary from a very romantic affair you share with your significant other to a day out with the family.  You can even go on a picnic by yourself if you want to get out and enjoy the crisp outdoors.

When you’re putting together a picnic, it’s important to put some thought into the food.  You don’t want to take food that will be too difficult to handle outdoors.  Most people opt to make sandwiches before heading outdoors.  However, you can also pick up some fried chicken or even fish and chips to take to the park.  Other options include bowls of fruit, crisp veggies, or even a pizza.  Try to avoid anything that takes silverware, although you can certainly take forks and such with you.  You may want to invest in paper or plastic plates and cups, though, so you don’t have to worry about breaking dishes.  If you’re taking a meal, pack it all up in a cooler to help keep it fresh.

If you plan on being outdoors for most of the day, you also want to take along food that won’t spoil quickly for a snack later.  This includes biscuits, crackers, crisps, nuts, and even things like cereal.  Most of this sounds unhealthy, but you can always substitute things like muffins and fruit.  Just don’t take anything for a snack that can’t stand being out of the fridge for too long unless you’ve packed it in a cooler with plenty of ice around it.

You will also want to take along plenty of drinks, especially if you’re planning to run around or be out in the sun.  You may even want to take a separate cooler for drinks.  In addition to soft drinks or juice, be sure to take along some water, too.

Now all you have to do is grab your picnic blanket, a Frisbee or your favourite book, and head out for a fun day outdoors!

Good Food While on Vacation

April 29th, 2009

Good food while on vacation can be hard to find. Many times you are in a place that you are not familiar with and have no idea what is in the area. One of the great things about going
on vacation is that you get to experience a whole new place. This is a great time to experience new kinds of foods, but if you do not know the area this can be very difficult to find
the local hotspots. This is not true anymore, that is thanks to the all the sites that are available to help you find the top local restaurants for just about any area.

The great thing about these sites is that they will give you the list of the most of the restaurants in that area. There are several different sites to choose from. I have used these two particular ones in the past: cityguides.aol.com and restaurantlistings.com. I found exactly what I was looking for and had a great time experiencing the local atmosphere. It really takes off some of the pressure while you are on vacation if you already know in advance what location that you are going to go for dinner. It will also allow you to know what kind of atmosphere you will be dinning in so that you are dressed appropriately.

There are many restaurants that have dress codes especially the higher priced dinning experiences. Finding the right restaurant online in advance will also allow you to know how much you will need for your dinning choices. You do no want to go to the restaurant only to find that you may not be able to afford the restaurant. You want to be able to enjoy your evening out so next time before you leave on vacation look up some of the great local restaurants in the area.

Planning a Dinner Party

April 27th, 2009

If you love to cook and you love spending time with your friends, you may want to combine the two activities and host a dinner party.  Dinner parties can be a lot of fun, especially if you come up with a theme for the party or do something exciting like a dinner party murder mystery game.  No matter what you do, though, you’re going to have to have a plan or you’ll end up panicking in the kitchen while your guests are knocking on the door.

First, before you even invite anyone, set the menu.  This way, you can let everyone know what you’re cooking in case any of your guests have food allergies.  If you’re doing a theme meal, it’s also nice to let your guests know the theme.  They may want to dress according to the theme or bring a theme-related host gift.  You also need to set an RSVP date for your guests so you know how much food to cook.

Once you have your guest list finalized, it’s time to go shopping.  You don’t want to have a lot of food left over, but it is always better to have a little too much than not enough, so plan your food purchases accordingly.  You should also take stock of your kitchen and decide if you have enough pots and pans to cook everything.  If possible, make some dishes earlier in the day or even the night before if you can.

It can get quite stressful if you’re trying to cook and clean your home at the same time, so do as much cleaning as you can before you start cooking.  If you have someone you can share chores with (a spouse, kids, or a co-host), ask them to do the vacuuming, sweeping, and such.  You can also have them set the table and do any decorating.

As the host of the party, you’re going to want to greet your guests when they arrive, but you’re also going to be needed in the kitchen.  To do both, aim to have most of your dishes done about 15 minutes before you plan to eat.  Then leave them on a low heat to keep them warm while you say hello to everyone.  You can also put them in serving dishes and cover them with lids or foil to keep them warm.  Just don’t do this too early or they will get cold.

Healthy Snacks for Kids

April 23rd, 2009

All parents want their kids to eat better, but when it comes to snacks, kids often reach for biscuits, sweets, and other unhealthy things.  healthy-snacksHow can you convince them that they need to eat healthier snacks?  By providing them, of course.  If you clear out all the junk food from your home and only have some of these healthy snacks available, your kids will have no choice by to try them if they want to snack.  Once they’ve tried them, they may be surprised to realise they like these snacks.  Here are just a few different ideas for healthy snacks:

•    Cut an apple into slices and spread peanut butter over them.
•    Likewise, you can spread peanut butter on celery sticks and then add raisins to the top.  This creates the “ants on a log” snack.
•    Dip a peeled banana in yogurt and then roll it in crushed cereal.  For best results, freeze this tasty treat before serving it.
•    For a healthy snack on a road trip, create your own trail mix by mixing cereal, nuts, and dried fruits together in a bag.
•    For a larger snack, microwave a small potato and add salsa and low-fat cheese.
•    Make a type of frozen yogurt sandwich by spreading yogurt between two cream crackers and adding a piece of sliced banana.
•    A healthy smoothie can be made by blending frozen strawberries, a banana, and low-fat milk.
•    Create kabobs by putting grapes and cheese on pretzel sticks.
•    Mix peanut butter and cornflakes together, roll them into balls, and roll them in crushed cream cracker crumbs.
•    Create a mini pizza by toasting an English muffin, covering it with pizza sauce, and adding low-fat cheese to it.

These are just a few good snack ideas for children.  What’s great about these ideas is that you can change them around a bit to suit your kids taste.  Once they try a few of them, you won’t have to worry about your kids going crazy over sweets again.

Family Night

April 22nd, 2009

Family night is a tradition that we have had in our family for about the last fifteen years. It is a night once a week where one person gets to choose what we do for the night. kids_playingThat includes what everyone will eat for dinner and how we will spend out time for that evening. I really enjoy this because for one night you do not really have to make any decision about what is for dinner unless it is your turn, but then you can eat out if you want.

I really enjoy this tradition because it really brings the whole family together for one night a week. The goal is that every week that one person gets to choose whatever they want whether other people really like it or not. You do not get to complain about what the person has chosen either. Everyone cooperates so that no gets left out.

An example of a family would be some one choosing to go to movie and a restaurant for dinner. It is also great when we choose to cook our own meals and rent a movie. No matter what the choice is the entire family is spending an evening together.

This is great because at least once a week you know that you will have to be the one who cooks the dinner for everyone. You also get to choose something that you really enjoy with out having to listen to people complain about it.

This traditional is really great for bringing the whole family together. You can choose for this to be immediate family only or you can invite other relatives as well. That is what is so great about family night and you never know what the next person might choose.

Last Cake Standing

April 21st, 2009

I really love to bake. One of my favorite hobbies is baking birthday cakes for the kids in my family. It is a lot cheaper and you can really create a cake around the party that the child is wanting.lastcakejpg I recently was looking for a great idea for a cake when I came across a show called Last Cake Standing. This show is a competition among different cake designers on the food network channel. These designers are all really talented and made really amazing cakes for the show.

If you enjoy baking and designing this is a show that I would recommend watching. The different techniques that they use are really interesting. I know that it would take me years to be able to even try to learn how these designers make these cakes look so amazing.

The great thing that I liked about this show is that you are not just watching an ordinary baking show that usually loses your attention after a few minutes. Since it is a competition among several different cake designers, it really creates an atmosphere of intrigue to see who will stay and who will be sent home this week.

In this show there is no audience that gets to decide the end result. Only the judges and the clients get to decide who the winner is and who is going to be sent home. So it is not a popularity contest. It is truly about the talent of the designer.

Dinner Decisions

April 20th, 2009

roast_beefDo you ever get tired of planning out your dinner every night? You constantly have to run to the market to pick up a few more things that you need. Does it seem that you never really end your day on a relaxing note because you just go, go, go all the time? I have a perfect solution for you then. I was watching a cooking show about just this thing, and the best thing to do is make a big weekly meal.

This may sound harder than it really is when you think about how much food your family eats in one week. I was surprised at how simple it really was to create and plan an entire weeks worth of meals around one kind of food. What you do is cook a really large piece of meat such as a roast. You use the left over roast to create four meals for the rest of the week. I will show you an example menu for a weeks worth of meals from one roast.

Day One: Roast cooked with vegetables and gravy
Day Two: Slice the extra roast and make smothered sandwiches and French fries.
Day Three: Break apart some of the roast and add BBQ sauce. Place on top of a baked potato to make loaded baked potatoes for everyone.
Day Four: Take the roast and gravy and simply add noodles to make Beef Stroganoff.
Day Five: Shred the last of the meat and add a packet of taco seasoning for soft tacos.

This technique is really simple and allows you know exactly what you are going to have for dinner every night with no extra planning needed. You can do this with other kinds of meat as well. You just want to make sure that you start with enough to make it through out the week
