Good Food While on Vacation

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

Good food while on vacation can be hard to find. Many times you are in a place that you are not familiar with and have no idea what is in the area. One of the great things about going
on vacation is that you get to experience a whole new place. This is a great time to experience new kinds of foods, but if you do not know the area this can be very difficult to find
the local hotspots. This is not true anymore, that is thanks to the all the sites that are available to help you find the top local restaurants for just about any area.

The great thing about these sites is that they will give you the list of the most of the restaurants in that area. There are several different sites to choose from. I have used these two particular ones in the past: cityguides.aol.com and restaurantlistings.com. I found exactly what I was looking for and had a great time experiencing the local atmosphere. It really takes off some of the pressure while you are on vacation if you already know in advance what location that you are going to go for dinner. It will also allow you to know what kind of atmosphere you will be dinning in so that you are dressed appropriately.

There are many restaurants that have dress codes especially the higher priced dinning experiences. Finding the right restaurant online in advance will also allow you to know how much you will need for your dinning choices. You do no want to go to the restaurant only to find that you may not be able to afford the restaurant. You want to be able to enjoy your evening out so next time before you leave on vacation look up some of the great local restaurants in the area.

Planning a Dinner Party

Monday, April 27th, 2009

If you love to cook and you love spending time with your friends, you may want to combine the two activities and host a dinner party.  Dinner parties can be a lot of fun, especially if you come up with a theme for the party or do something exciting like a dinner party murder mystery game.  No matter what you do, though, you’re going to have to have a plan or you’ll end up panicking in the kitchen while your guests are knocking on the door.

First, before you even invite anyone, set the menu.  This way, you can let everyone know what you’re cooking in case any of your guests have food allergies.  If you’re doing a theme meal, it’s also nice to let your guests know the theme.  They may want to dress according to the theme or bring a theme-related host gift.  You also need to set an RSVP date for your guests so you know how much food to cook.

Once you have your guest list finalized, it’s time to go shopping.  You don’t want to have a lot of food left over, but it is always better to have a little too much than not enough, so plan your food purchases accordingly.  You should also take stock of your kitchen and decide if you have enough pots and pans to cook everything.  If possible, make some dishes earlier in the day or even the night before if you can.

It can get quite stressful if you’re trying to cook and clean your home at the same time, so do as much cleaning as you can before you start cooking.  If you have someone you can share chores with (a spouse, kids, or a co-host), ask them to do the vacuuming, sweeping, and such.  You can also have them set the table and do any decorating.

As the host of the party, you’re going to want to greet your guests when they arrive, but you’re also going to be needed in the kitchen.  To do both, aim to have most of your dishes done about 15 minutes before you plan to eat.  Then leave them on a low heat to keep them warm while you say hello to everyone.  You can also put them in serving dishes and cover them with lids or foil to keep them warm.  Just don’t do this too early or they will get cold.

Family Night

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009

Family night is a tradition that we have had in our family for about the last fifteen years. It is a night once a week where one person gets to choose what we do for the night. kids_playingThat includes what everyone will eat for dinner and how we will spend out time for that evening. I really enjoy this because for one night you do not really have to make any decision about what is for dinner unless it is your turn, but then you can eat out if you want.

I really enjoy this tradition because it really brings the whole family together for one night a week. The goal is that every week that one person gets to choose whatever they want whether other people really like it or not. You do not get to complain about what the person has chosen either. Everyone cooperates so that no gets left out.

An example of a family would be some one choosing to go to movie and a restaurant for dinner. It is also great when we choose to cook our own meals and rent a movie. No matter what the choice is the entire family is spending an evening together.

This is great because at least once a week you know that you will have to be the one who cooks the dinner for everyone. You also get to choose something that you really enjoy with out having to listen to people complain about it.

This traditional is really great for bringing the whole family together. You can choose for this to be immediate family only or you can invite other relatives as well. That is what is so great about family night and you never know what the next person might choose.

Dinner Decisions

Monday, April 20th, 2009

roast_beefDo you ever get tired of planning out your dinner every night? You constantly have to run to the market to pick up a few more things that you need. Does it seem that you never really end your day on a relaxing note because you just go, go, go all the time? I have a perfect solution for you then. I was watching a cooking show about just this thing, and the best thing to do is make a big weekly meal.

This may sound harder than it really is when you think about how much food your family eats in one week. I was surprised at how simple it really was to create and plan an entire weeks worth of meals around one kind of food. What you do is cook a really large piece of meat such as a roast. You use the left over roast to create four meals for the rest of the week. I will show you an example menu for a weeks worth of meals from one roast.

Day One: Roast cooked with vegetables and gravy
Day Two: Slice the extra roast and make smothered sandwiches and French fries.
Day Three: Break apart some of the roast and add BBQ sauce. Place on top of a baked potato to make loaded baked potatoes for everyone.
Day Four: Take the roast and gravy and simply add noodles to make Beef Stroganoff.
Day Five: Shred the last of the meat and add a packet of taco seasoning for soft tacos.

This technique is really simple and allows you know exactly what you are going to have for dinner every night with no extra planning needed. You can do this with other kinds of meat as well. You just want to make sure that you start with enough to make it through out the week

Get Your Kids Cooking with Nintendo’s Cooking Game

Monday, April 20th, 2009

Want to get your kids interested in cooking but aren’t sure how?  Perhaps the answer is a video game.  Personal Trainer: Cooking is a “game” for the Nintendo DS, Nintendo’s handheld video game system that features a chef who will walk kids (and adults) through over 250 different dishes from around the world.  The game is part cookbook, part demo video that can teach anyone, no matter their age, how to cook some excellent dishes.

The game walks kids through each and every step of the process: it starts with giving a list of dishes needed, then moves on to ingredients.  Rather than just tell you what you need, it explains why each ingredient is important.  However, you may not have everything on hand for some dishes.  If you need to go shopping, all you have to do is use the DS’s stylus to tap a check box next to the ingredient.  The game will actually create a shopping list for you.  You can then take the device to the shops and check off ingredients as you purchase them.

Once you’re back in the kitchen, it’s time to begin cooking!  The chef will help you throughout the entire process, including offering instructional videos as needed.  But what if you end up covered in flour or something and don’t want to touch your game system?  Simple—the DS features a built-in microphone, and the game allows you to give the chef voice commands like “Repeat,” “Pause,” and more.

In addition to teaching you and your kids how to cook, Personal Trainer: Cooking also includes nutritional information like calorie counts.  It also ranks dishes by difficulty and preparation time, so you know which ones you should start with first or which dishes are best for your kids to make on their own.  Once they start learning how to cook with the chef, you’ll find your kids helping you in the kitchen every day without being asked.

Cake Designs

Thursday, April 16th, 2009

I don’t know if you have every watched the show Ace of Cakes. If you really like to bake or create your own cakes, you would really enjoy watching this show. ace-of-cakesThis show is about a bakery that can design just about anything you want. Many people will bring in a picture of a particular item that they want the cake to look like, and a few days later the cake is finished.

This is a very interesting show. They show step by step how each one of their featured cakes are designed and put together. When they create the cakes, they make sure that 95% of the cake is edible.

The designers use all kinds of frosting techniques. Fondant seems to be a favorite because it will hold the shape for long periods of time unlike regular frosting that can melt. They color the frosting or fondant with air guns so that they get just the right amount of coloring for each piece of the cake. Sometimes they have so many different parts to each cake that it may take them four or five days to frost and put together.

If you enjoy baking and creating your own masterpiece, then this is definitely a show that you would like to watch. You can really learn a lot about how to use certain techniques to get the end result that you are wanting. I know from experience that making a cake and decorating it can become a disaster very quickly. This show has given me a lot of helpful tips to keep this from happening.

Organizing Your Kitchen

Thursday, April 16th, 2009

Organizing your kitchen is a very personal thing.  If you’ve ever helped someone do the dishes, you know that they have a place for each and every item, and sometimes it’s nowhere near where you would store that item. tidy-kitchen The reverse is true as well—guests in your kitchen may wonder why your mixing bowls are kept in one cabinet and not in another.  It probably makes perfect sense to you, though.

However, while personal preference certainly plays a large role in organizing the kitchen, logic should also play a role.  To start off, it’s always best to keep your pots and pans in the cabinets closest to your stove and oven.  This just makes sense because you’ll need these items on the stove, not near your sink or other location.  Likewise, keep your utensils like spatulas, stirring spoons, and whisks near the stove as well.  You don’t want to have to go to the other end of the kitchen to get a spoon to stir a burning sauce.

Large cabinets are generally designed to hold your cooking gadgets—toasters, blenders, electric skillets, etc.—and it’s a good idea to make use of these larger storage spaces so you don’t take up all of your counter space with these items.  Don’t forget to make use of any special hooks or racks found in your cabinets, either.

If you find yourself with a small kitchen, you might consider purchasing a buffet or china cabinet.  You can put these pieces of furniture in your dining room and use them to store your plates, cups, silverware, and other things that you don’t necessary need to have in the kitchen.  These items also look very nice and can provide a nice way of showing off your nice china sets.

Cooking in a Clean Kitchen

Friday, April 3rd, 2009

Have you ever thought about how many germs are in your home? Most people do not realize that a lot of the germs that are in there home are right in their kitchen. cleankitchenThe kitchen is a high traffic area that everyone at one point in time or another will pass through. That means think about how many hands have touched the refrigerator door. The refrigerator door has a lot of germs that are passed around from one person to the next. This makes your kitchen a hot spot for all kinds of germs.

Keeping your kitchen clean will help keep your family healthy. One of the most germ infested items in a kitchen is the sponge that many people use for cleaning the counters and the dishes. A sponge can contain thousands of germs. Since a sponge can stay wet for long periods of time, it allows germs to grow and multiply. Using a sponge that has germs to clean will only spread more germs around kitchen.

A good way to keep your kitchen clean is to use disposable anti-bacterial cleaning wipes. This will keep germs to a minimum and you will not be exposing your sponge to array of germs already there. It is also recommended that you replace the sponge at your sink once every week. This will also help eliminate the spreading of germs around the kitchen. If you follow these few tips, you should have a nice clean and germ free kitchen.

Spring Cleaning Your Kitchen

Thursday, April 2nd, 2009

Do you ever feel like winter really makes a mess out of your kitchen? It seems that with all of the cold weather food that gets made just seems to take more dishes. This is a problem that I have. I like to make stews, soups, and chili during the winter months,kitchen-cabinets-01 but the dishes that it takes to make them takes up a lot of room. I usually use this time of year to reorganize my cabinets.

Spring is a time a year when I like to bake more, but I always have a hard time finding the right dish to bake in. I have to dig through all the heavy pots and pans that I have used all winter long just to find one that is usable. This is the reason I reorganize every year. This allows me to go right to the light weight baking dishes instead of the really big stock pots that have been out all winter long.

I usually just put all of the stock pots towards the back of the cabinets. I may not have room for all of them. So many times I put some in a storage closet close by. That way if I do need them they are still easily accessible. It is nice when you are not spending a lot of your time digging through your cabinets trying to find the right dish to cook your meal. You do not want to have to pull everything out of the cabinet just for one thing because that means you spend a lot of time putting everything back as well. Try to put the items that you use more often towards the front so that they are there and ready to be used. This is just something that I do to make cooking a little more enjoyable.

Cooking Outdoors

Friday, March 27th, 2009

It is coming up on the time of year when everyone starts cooking outdoors. There is just something different about food that has been cooked on a grill or open fire. This is usually a really healthy option. Cooking outdoors can create a number of problems if you do not take the right precautions.

You will want to make sure that the area that you are going to be cooking in is well ventilated. It is common for people to become sick after cooking in an enclosed area. If you are going to be using a grill, do not place it in a closed garage. This can cause you to inhale toxic fumes that cause serious breathing problems. Grills should only be used if you have plenty of fresh air available while you are cooking. Gas grills are better for you than charcoal grills as well. Charcoal can release carbon monoxide in higher quantities.

If you are going to be cooking over an open fire, you will want to make sure that you have access to a fire extinguisher. Open fires can easily get out of hand without warning. It is also recommended that you are going to have a fire pit that you surround it with rocks. This will keep the fire from spreading out of the designated area.

Cooking outdoors is a great way to enjoy this time of year. You will want to make sure that you follow all of the necessary precaution. This will help reduce any chances of having any accidents while enjoying the great outdoors.
