Spice Up Your Cooking

Friday, February 27th, 2009

Every cook wants to be known for at least one main dish that they make. It can be a real compliment for people to really enjoy the food that you spent a lot of time preparing. They want to make something that is unique and one of a kind. One of the best ways to make a popular dish unique is to add an array of spices. It can give an ordinary dish a whole new flavor. You can turn just about any dish into something spectacular just by adding a few new spices.

Trying new spices can be a fun way to learn about the flavors that certain spices can add to a dish. This will also give you the opportunity to find the kind of spices that you like and dislike in certain foods. Some spices can be really strong and others have a very light flavor. It is important to test out spices a little at a time so that you do not over load the meal with something too strong. You do not want to lose the natural flavor of the meal by adding in too much of a really strong spice such as chili powder, cayenne pepper, or Cajun spices. This may make the dish too hot to enjoy.

When adding new spices to any new dish, you will want to start with less than the recipe requires. This way you can determine if you like it. You can always add more later; You can not take away once it has been added. It is better to start with less flavor then it is to start out with too much spice on the food.

Healthy Choices

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009

The central discussion on most food related sites is about healthy choices. There are all kinds of suggestions of how to eat healthier foods. Most of the time, these sites are telling you to stop eating certain foods. They do not tell you that most of the food that you eat is okay, but you should just prepare it in a different way. You can eat just about any food out there if you know how to prepare it in a healthy way.

Grilling is the perfect way to continue eating the foods that you like. When you grill your food, you allow the natural fats and oils to be removed. Your food is a lot healthier when it is not sitting in a puddle of fat. A grilled steak has a lot less fat than a steak that is pan fried. Grilled chicken or fish is a healthier option to the traditional fried version. It can also be a better tasting option. Grilling allows you to try new spices that may make the food more flavorful.

Grilling is a simple option for people who are trying to lose or maintain a certain amount of weight. You do not have to say goodbye to some of your favorite foods. Just try adding something different to them when you are cooking them. Grilling also gives you a chance to combine certain flavors together on the grill. Many people like to combine certain fruits and vegetables with meat to make great tasting kabobs. This is the way to add more healthy options while you are preparing meat for a delicious meal!

Appetizers Everyone Will Enjoy

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

Appetizers are a great party starter. These little snacks can set the mood of any get-together. Whether you are celebrating a special occasion or just enjoying some time with family and friends, you will want to serve something that everyone will enjoy. A simple appetizer can go a long ways to making people enjoy their time spent together. Below are a couple of appetizers that a lot of my family seems to enjoy.

Shrimp kabobs -These are some of the most compelling grilled appetizers on the list. You only need a few ingredients to make these delicious treats. You will need medium sized shrimp, pineapple chunks, and your favorite vegetable. On the skewer you just alternate between the three and you have your delicious appetizer. This treat will only take a few minutes to grill or bake. Including the preparation of the kabobs, you will likely have the kabobs ready to eat after grilling within 15 minutes.

Rosemary Cheese Croissants – These croissants make a light appetizer that is great for any occasion. The great thing about it is that you do not need a lot of ingredients and can stay away from baking. You will need cream cheese, rosemary, and croissants. You should buy pre-made croissants to save a little time. The mini croissants work the best. Mix the cream cheese and rosemary together and simply spread inside the croissant. It is so simple that you will want to make these for all of your parties.

Make the Perfect Chicken

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

Do you love cooking chicken for your family?  If so, you’ll love this chicken infuser and roaster.  It will make your chicken taste amazing!  The chicken infuser and roaster is made out of stainless steel, and you can use it both indoors and outdoors.  It’s very easy to prepare your chicken, too: just fill up the infuser with your favourite marinade, set the chicken on top of the infuser, and then put the roaster on your grill or into your oven.  Set your timer, and in no time you’ll be enjoying an amazing meal.

In addition to the great meals that the chicken infuser and roaster make, you’ll get other benefits from the pan.  Since the chicken stands upright on the infuser, all of the fat drips down into the pan.  This results in a healthier meal overall.  It also results in a faster cooking time: cooking your chicken upright actually means that it cooks in about two-thirds the time it usually would.

You also get a lot more flavour since the marinade is infused into the meat.  The marinade will spread out more evenly, resulting in meat that is fully and thoroughly flavoured.  This makes all of the chicken tender and moist.

In addition to cooking the chicken in this infuser, you can also vegetables to the roasting pan.  These potatoes and other vegetables will absorb the flavour of your marinade, adding even more flavour to your meal.

Since the infuser is made out of stainless steel, it’s very easy to clean after you’re done cooking.  In fact, it’s actually dishwasher safe.  The product also includes a five year guarantee.

Organizing Your Kitchen

Friday, February 20th, 2009

Working in a cluttered kitchen can really add time to the whole cooking process. It will not only take you longer to cook the meal, but you will waste time searching for the right dishes to cook the meal in. It can be very helpful, if you take the time to have a specific spot for all of your every day dishes. This will really cut back on the preparation time of starting your dinner.

It is recommended that you place all of your regularly used dishes in a place that is easily accessible. This means do not place them in a deep cupboard where you can not reach them easily. You want to be able to get to them without having to dig around under the cabinet looking for the right roasting pan or stock pot. If you already know exactly where all of your dishes are, you are more likely to enjoy the cooking experience. It will seem like less of a chore if you do not have to hunt down your favorite dish.

Cooking utensils can also create a problem in the kitchen if you do not have them organized. If you use a kitchen caddy where all of your utensils are all in the same area, it may make it difficult to find the right one. It can be very helpful if you separate the cooking utensils from the serving utensils. This will come in handy when it is time to serve the meal at dinner time.

Keeping your cabinets in order is a great way to reduce the amount of time you spend preparing for your meal. It will also make the experience a lot more enjoyable if you are not on a hunt for the correct dish to cook the meal.

Making Weekly Meal Plans

Thursday, February 19th, 2009

The grocery store is one place that you can not avoid. You have to make weekly trips for to the store for the meals that you cook. Some great tips that you can use will help you decrease the amount of time that you have to spend at the store is making a weekly menu, and creating a shopping list. No more walking from one end of the store to other because you can not find the missing ingredient for the last meal of the week.

One of the first things to do before you even go to the store is to make a list of what you what to make for the week. Then you will need to create a shopping list according to your meal plan. You do not want to spend time wandering through the store trying to decide on what you are going to make. If you make out a weekly meal plan or menu, you will know exactly what ingredients to place on your list.

When you are creating your list, place all of the similar items together. This way you will be able to get all of your vegetables, diary products, and meats at one time. You will not have to go back and forth buying for each individual meal. This will cut back on how much time you spend just pushing your way through the store.

You will definitely change your shopping experience if you following these simple tips. Unfortunately, most people spend all of their wandering from isle to isle trying to figure out if they have everything they need for the week.

Baking Tips

Tuesday, February 17th, 2009

Many people assume that baking times are all the same when you are cooking a cake or pie. It is important to remember that it all depends on what kind of pan you are using. When you are reading the recipe, you need to make sure that you are using the same kind of pan that the recipe is calling for. If you do not use the same pan, the results can be a real big mess.

Glass pans are some of the most common used pans for making cakes. This is because just about everyone has them. When you are using a glass pan, you should always turn down the temperature about 20 to 25 degrees. This will keep you from burning the cake or pie. It will also help keep the moisture at the right level.

Shiny metal pans are usually the pans that the recipes are made for. You do not normally have to change the cooking time in these pans. A dark metal pan will need to be watched closely as the temperature should be turned down as well.

If the recipe calls for a deep pan dish, but you only have a shallow pan; the time will need to be reduced by about a ¼. This will prevent the pie or cake from burning before the cooking time is up. The opposite is true for putting a recipe in a deep dish instead of a shallow dish.

Inexpensive Meal Ideas

Friday, February 13th, 2009

Everyone is looking at how to save money at a time when the whole world seems to be watching their pocket books. This means more and more families are trying to stay away from restaurants. Supermarkets have even seen a cut on their profits because families can not afford to buy the higher priced foods anymore.

Creating meals on a budget can be a demanding task. Here are two quick recipes that everyone is sure to love, and will not break your pocket book.

Vegetable Beef dinner
One pound ground beef
1 frozen package mixed vegetables
2 cups of white instant rice
1 can of beef broth
Parmesan Cheese

Cook ground beef until brown, in a separate pan cook rice for about 8 minutes or until soft. Thaw frozen vegetables while beef and rice are cooking. When both beef and rice are finished combine all ingredients and cook for approximately 10 minutes, adding the cheese the last five minutes.

Meatballs and Spaghetti

One pound ground beef
1 package spaghetti noodles
1 jar of spaghetti sauce
Parmesan Cheese

Cook ground beef until it is brown in the center of the meatball. This may take about twenty minutes on med-high heat. In a separate pan bring water to a boil and add spaghetti. Cook spaghetti for approximately 7 to 10 minutes. Pour the jar of spaghetti sauce in a pan and add the meatballs to the sauce. Once the sauce is simmering turn down the heat. Simply top the noodles with sauce and add Parmesan cheese.
